The Motorola 68000 CPU

The 68000, or 68K, was a CPU designed by Motorola in the late 70's, and produced from 1979 to 2001. Although it saw it's greatest success in controller applications, it was also a popular choice for game consoles during the 16-bit era. Some noteable home and arcade game systems using this processor include:

*Sega Genesis/Sega Mega Drive

*SNK Neo Geo MVS/AES

*Sega CD

*Capcom System 12


68000 Clones

Although Motorola developed the technology, they liscenced it to other manufactures. These manufactures built clones of the Motorola-built "MC68000". Some of these clones include:

Toshiba's TMP68000

Hitachi's HD68000

Signetics' SCN68000

Rockwell's RK68000
